This unobtrusive family-style diner is tucked away in a brick building off the main drag of Central, and is easy to miss and hard to forget. In a city full of charming diners low on fancy decor and high on good food at low prices, the Diamond is a gem, indeed. Walk in and find an older clientele of families and seniors, a nondescript paint job and old-timey booths with Formica tabletops. The food is home cooking, Southern style: fresh and tasty fried and broiled seafood (including a great trout dinner), meat-and-two options, fried chicken livers, baked and fried chicken, pot pie, biscuits and other beloved items from the Southern table. Your meal will probably be prepared by Parnesh Lowry, the Diamond's cook, who's baked the venue's signature corn muffins since the mid-50s. Every neighborhood has its careworn working-class joint serving good food at good prices. In Plaza Midwood, it's the Diamond -- and it has been since 1945.

Why aren't there more restaurants like this in Charlotte? For a very fair price, you get a ton of wonderful food, and have a huge menu to choose from. I highly recommend the country-style steak over rice, with fried okra and the salad. Would someone please tell the up-and-coming restauranteurs that there are way too many yuppie establishments in Charlotte, and that we need more home-cooking restaurants like the Diamond? Someone please open up one in the University area! The Diamond is a local treasure, and its longevity proves its value. Keep up the great work!
