The largest film and TV studio in the world, Universal Studios has come a long way since 1915, when silent film magnate Carl Laemmle set up shop on a converted chicken ranch in what is now known as Universal City. The studio tour has evolved substantially as well. Laemmle originally charged guests a quarter a head; in return, they could watch new productions being filmed and maybe even spot a celebrity or two. Eventually, in an effort to compete with the likes of Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm, the park's focus was shifted to movie-themed rides and attractions. The backlot tram tour still takes you through such classic set pieces as "The Collapsing Bridge" and "The Parting of the Red Sea," but these days, most Universal visitors come for the innovative, special effects packed attractions and thrill rides. -- Lena Katz (Photo: D J Stevenson-Mascis)
